raincoat.

Reproduction of the standard issue raincoat worn by US Army troops during WWII. Initially, the coats were made from coated rubber, which was changed to synthetic resin as the War went on. The coats were approximately knee length, and were oversized in order that that could be worn over other jackets and coats. No hood was provided, as these were designed to be worn with the steel helmet which, theoretically, protected the head and diverted the water down one's back.

The were a number of small variations of the raincoat produced during the War and several different specs. We chose the 71F model with the Raglan sleeve which was introduced in the Summer of 1943. It features a back flap with vents underneath, riveted reinforcements on the pocket corners and cuff tabs, and armpit vents.

Our coats look like originals- the fabric and color has the same appearance of the authentic coats, albeit they weight approximately 1 pound more and a a bit stiffer. The buttons, rivets, and fittings are exact copies- even the stock numbers on the spec labels are correct.

WWII coats are assembled almost exclusively with cement (glue), but the contractor was unable to find any bonding agent that would hold the material reliably and remain flexible, so ours are sewn.

We did test drive one in a downpour and no water leaked through any of the stitching. However, due to the lack of a hood and the imperfect irrigation provided by the helmet, some went down the neck. The test was done on a warm day and we were pleasantly surprised how well the armpit and rear vents worked to mitigate the greenhouse effect.

Sizing: We copied the WWII sizing on original raincoats- which were only made in generic sizes- Small, Medium, Large and X-Large with sleeves and bodies equating to "long" sizes. The cut can be described as huge as they were designed to fit over field jackets and coats.
The coats are 45"-49" long depending on size.
