We had this 100% linen thread specially made for sewing buttons on German fieldgear and uniforms. This stuff is tough as hell- one is more likely to lose a plug of fabric from the gear or garment than to have this thread break.

Each spool has approximately 20 yards of thread which is enough to do a complete shelter quarter- or one heck of a lot of breadbags or rucksacks.
Dainty little sewing needles won't work for this thread- it requires a saddle or heavy gauge hand sewing needle.

Tip: On Zelts and fieldgear, it's much, much easier to sew on buttons if one uses an awl to first make the 2, 3 or 4 small holes in the fabric (depending on the button type) rather than trying to force the needle through heavy canvas.
