We have constant problems with people over-complicating this and trying to outsmart us (and the Germans). Order your waist size. If you want to be 100% certain what that is, simply take a tape measure and run it around your waist or lower belly- where ever you wear your belt. For example, if it measures 36 inches, then order a 36 belt. Very simple! These belts have 5 inches of adjustment. Even with a greatcoat or parka, they will adjust enough.
Do not assume that the Germans were so daft as to not realize that their soldiers would be wearing thick coats.
