The rayon fabric is an
exact copy of the original
cloth.
At the end of 1942, both the Heer and Waffen SS began issuing the then new Tarnwendeuniformen. As was most often the case, the SS garments were slightly different than those used by the Army. The SS parkas reversed from white to fieldgray (rather than "mouse gray"), had scalloped pocket flaps and the size markings were stamped in the neck instead of under the storm flap. These uniforms first appear in period photos during the Kharkov counter attack in early 1943. They were issued concurrently with the fur lined anoraks.

ATF Parkas: This generation of Winter uniforms is completely new and shares no materials with the previous runs. All details were taken from original examples and there is no relation between these and any other reproductions. The most notable change on our new parkas is the rayon fabric, which was copied exactly from original swatches and the specs in the Richardson Report from 1945. The cloth isn't similar to WWII fabric- it's identical.

Our fieldgray color was matched from a mint condition original, and correctly printed rather than dyed. One detail typically missed on reproduction winter uniforms is the color of the white side. We had our fabric printed matte white like originals, not bright "bleach" white. The texture, look and behavior of this material differs from cotton and is what give originals their peculiar look. Our uniforms have that same that appearance.

For the insulation, we used the heaviest polar fleece available which is 400 grams per meter. This has the same feel and physical weight of the Reißwolle (recycled wool) of the authentic parkas. The thermal qualities of the fleece are as good or better and it was far less expensive.

All buttons, draw cords, and webbing are exact copied of the originals. The buttonholes are the correct eyelet with bartack type, the thread is the proper color and the size markings are done in the SS style- a small Arabic numeral stamped in the neck. (I've never seen an original with a maker name and certainly no buffalo wings (BW) nonsense.

The cut of our parkas is the same as WWII- my originals are where the pattern came from.

They are oversized to allow for several layers of clothing underneath.

Water Repellent: Both sides of the parkas are treated with Teflon fabric protector. This is the best quality DWR (Durable Water Repellent) available and is superior to the Peristol used on originals. It is completely invisible and does not affect the feel of the fabric in any way- aside from making it feel slightly smoother than untreated cloth.

Fit: These are sized like the originals which were made to allow room for several layers of clothing to be worn underneath. When new, they run long to allow for shrinkage.

Washing: The best option is to hand wash these in cold water. Shrinkage will be about 2" in the sleeve length and 3" for the body. They take about 24 hours to dry when hung over a boot dryer.
We do not recommend using a clothes dryer! We tested this and it increases the shrinkage and it seems to cause the insulation to shift inside. However, the insulation will eventually settle back into place with continued wear.

apparent color difference is due
