P41 USMC Utilities

In November 1941, the U.S. Marine Corps introduced the sage green HBT (Herringbone Twill) utilities as a fatigue uniform to be worn on work and training duties. However, the Marines immediately took to wearing the comfortable and hard-wearing clothing as their main combat uniform. The early Pacific battles were fought wearing a mix of khakis, Army HBT uniforms and USMC utilities. By 1943, the USMC utilities were the signature uniform of the U.S. Marines. In late 1944, and fatigue cap was designed and the pattern of the utilities was modified, creating the P44 uniform. By summer 1945, both patterns were being worn concurrently.
ATF's reproduction USMC utilities are a near perfect recreation of the original. Our HBT cotton was woven in Virginia, using an unissued original sample to match the thread count and color. The cloth is additionally colorfasted and UV protected to prevent rapid fading or turning strange and unpleasant colors due to washing or exposure to sunlight. (Some other reproductions have turned orange or purple). Our USMC buttons were copied from originals by the Scovil company. Our HBT's are washer safe and as close to the original as you can get.

On a historical authenticity note:

Marines also used large quantities of Army HBT uniforms. From photos I have examined (of WWII, not reenactments), it appears the pants (the Army trousers have cargo pockets so they are easy to spot) and first pattern shirts were commonly "acquired" for Marine Corps use. The Army HBT cap was also worn, sometimes with a metal EGA attached to the front. This appears more prevalent in the earlier campaigns (Guadalcanal) and with the Raiders. We know reenactors think everything "matched" and everyone was "cookie-cutter" perfectly uniformed, but that's bullshit.

P44 Uniforms:
We have no plans to make these at this time. That means, we cannot possibly give you an approximate delivery date. Clear?

P41 Utility Trouser
HBT fatigue trouser. These feature watch pocket, button fly, dungaree buttons, belt loops, straight legs, hip and thigh pockets. This is one of the best all around work trousers we have ever encountered. The more you wash the suckers, the better they look and feel. The only marking is the waist size on the band, just like most originals.
$50.00
Sizing/ Shrinkage: Our trouser waist sizes run slightly larger than marked, which will allow for shrinkage. If you order one size larger than you normally wear in order to compensate it will indeed be too big. Our inseams are accurate, 36" when new. Washing will shrink the waist about 1" and the inseams 2-2 1/2".

All inseams are now 36". Yes, long for most, but now the tall people won't need add-ons. Hemming trousers is pretty simple.
