U.S. Service Coats: The Service Coat was introduced in the
1920's to replace the W.W.I pattern tunics with the standing collars.
It was used as a field uniform until 1941 when the
M1941 Field Jacket took its place. From then until the end of
the War, the Service Coat was used for garrison duty and a dress
uniform. There were several pattern changes made between 1939 and
1942. Our jackets are the 1941 pattern which had a bi-swing back,
but lacked the brass belt hooks of the earlier designs.
(Original Service Coats are now on the Original
US Uniforms page.)
Exclusively an ATF product: These jackets were made specifically
for us. They are not available nor related to any other repro Ike
jackets sold by any other vendor. Any problems, flaws or idiosyncrasies
associated with jackets sold elsewhere have no bearing on our uniforms.
Pattern: As with the Ike Jackets, I spent literally
days and days tweaking the patterns for the Service Coats. An original
44R was used as a base pattern, not a 36S. I have almost every size
of original Service Coat up 50L. The manufacturer was provided with original coats in sizes 40R, 44R and 48R so they would be able to grade these correctly. We should have no problems with
customers needing to compensate for skewed patterns, pockets in
the armpits or tiny shoulders. Compared
to other reproductions, these FIT.
We have no plans to make "Longs" due to very tepid interest.
Sizing: Order your normal coat size. These are roomy enough
to wear a tank top and wool shirt underneath.
Taper and the All-American Physique: I have also posted the
waist sizes. If you have a prominent beer gut or are in your third
trimester, you may need to "upsize" to cover your parts.
These are not the most flattering jackets if you have a beach ball
under your shirt. This is exactly like originals!
Wear: Officially, a wool
(flannel) shirt and necktie was
to be worn underneath, but many troops chose to wear the more comfortable
khaki cotton shirt instead.
Content: 100% wool shell, 100% cotton twill lining.
No fabric samples: We do not manufacture these. They are
imported. Thus, we have no scraps to send you. These are definitely
the correct shade and cloth. I promise...
