Sewing Tips:

Unit patches actually had no prescribed regulation position when sewn to the upper sleeve, but usually they were placed 1/2"-1" under the shoulder seam. The wearer's current unit was sewn to the left sleeve, while any previous unit might be placed on the right sleeve. Shoulder patches were seen on all troops in the Normandy invasion, but as the war progressed, it was more common to see no divisional patches (especially on field jackets).

US Insignia Main Page

Divisional Patches: All the patches pictured on this page are reproductions. They may vary slightly from those in the photos as we use two different manufacturers, but they will be the correct size and color for W.W.II. All have "raw edges".

Originals: Additionally, we occasionally have a few originals mixed in. I'm not talking about white tongue 101, "greenback" 82nd, or other rare and valuable patches. We do know better. However, some of the patches may be original. Original patches are usually in new condition, but a few have been sewn on, yet are very clean. We won't send junk. However, my point here is this. If you MUST have perfection, no soiling, not an inkling of a stitch hole, then request a reproduction patch.

Historical Reference: Combat Chronicles of US Army Divisions in WWII is a good website for basic divisional histories. They also have lists of the sub-units (regiments and support battalions) assigned to each division.

Historical Note:

The multitude of 101st ABN patches reflect simply manufacturer variations which were found necessary for us to reproduce due to the intense interest in this unit. Although the bullion patches were normally seen only Ike jackets and 4-pocket wool coats (Class A), the 3 other patches above were used indiscriminately on field and dress uniforms. There is no special meaning to one or the other; they are only variations seen due to the War department using several different contractors to produce the same patch. If someone tries to tell you that "the 506th only used this or that patch", that someone is exercising his or her right to be an idiot and ought to be ignored. Pick which one you think is most attractive. That's it.
