M44 Tunics
The M44 was the final design change of the standard service coat issued to the Heer and Waffen SS. This tunic entered field trials in the Spring and Summer of 1944. Mass production began later that summer. Although intended to be made from a new olive brown colored wool, in practice, these were made from about every shade of field gray as well. Our reproductions are made from the same field gray wool as our other German uniforms.
Fit note: These M44's are cut more accurately than the other wool tunics we carry. The sleeves are shorter and the waist is more tapered.
M44 Breast eagles: These tunics often used a simplified breast eagle, on a triangular backing. At this time, we do not have a reproduction of this patch. No one style of eagle is correct (all were used) but in case you were wondering...

Imported.
Tunic w/ basic EM insignia $125.00

Basic Insignia Sewing Included

The price of German Tunics now includes sewing service for one pair of EM collar tabs and an EM breast or sleeve eagle for no additional charge. Other insignia, awards or alterations are extra cost. Sale and closeout items are exempt unless otherwise noted.

Two very important notes regarding insignia sewing:

1. Sewing of insignia may delay the shipping of your order for 4-5 days.

2. Any uniform which has had insignia sewn on is subject to a 30% restocking charge if returned. Any additional sewing charges (such as for cuff titles or tresse) are not refundable. (There is no charge for sewing on EM collar tabs and an eagle.)
Why a restocking fee? When a uniform is returned, we will have to remove the insignia and it and the uniform will have stitch holes which render them "used".
Therefore, if you are unsure of your size, we urge you to try it on first and then return it to us for sewing.
For more details and sewing rates go to the Insignia Sewing page.

Authenticity facts regarding M44 Tunics
Issue:
This style tunic was manufactured from mid-1944 until the end of the War. It never replaced the earlier styles and it is not terribly common to see in photos even in 1945.

Heer vs. SS:
Both services used the same tunic. There was no "SS" pattern M44. Although it is not uncommon to find these made from Italian wool, most have Heer insignia. Despite some mis-conceptions, Italian wool was used by numerous factories, not just the SS.

Curiously, SS manufactured M44's (Ravensbruck marked) have been seen with what appears to be factory applied Heer insignia. Did the SS start sub-contracting? Who knows...
